These are bass bodies produced by companies that are like Fender, in the same style (or shape) as Fender, or even simply using a different shaped body altogether but making components able to be attached to these bodies.
For example; an aftermarket body that uses just the same neck pocket dimensions as Fender to enable attachment of a Fender-style neck. Or that uses the electronics similar as Fender. The list is exhausting the companies that are attached to Fender . . . and, why not? Fender is a great platform and where it all began for me back in 1973.
 | SX Jazz Bass Bodies
Just about everyone knows that SX basses are a great deal where you simply cannot beat the price while still being as close to Fender-built without actually being a Fender. Like Squier basses but even less expensive. And if you're into building basses or modding them there's not a better place to start but with a bare bass body and build on that platform . . .
Many buy their SX bass guitars from Kurt at Rondo Music and start modifying them to their own taste. I prefer to begin with a body and neck and add my own colors, electronics, etcetera because, even though Kurt provides an ever expanding inventory, sometimes the right bass is something different that isn't offered. It could be something as simple as color combinations, but that's enough reason for me to start from scratch. Besides, there's nothing quite like building your own bass guitar that makes it your own.
I also like to try different SX bass necks. It allows me to be able to switch between fretted and fretless and from all maple to maple with a rosewood fingerboard. That's a great way to learn about setting up and maintaining your own basses too, but I'm sure you already know that~!
If you need any help, don't forget, I do this for a living and will be happy to help you select parts or pick out a bass. I'll even do the work for you . . .
