SOLD to Ron Rummage: Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008
Ron wants to swap the fretless neck for a fretted so that's what I'm gonna do~!

SX SJB Alder Jazz Bass Body - It came sanded & sealed.
Antique White Finish, 5 coats color and 4 coats clear.
Color sanded with 600, 800, 1000, and 2000 grit wet.
Polished with Blue Coral liguid and sealed with Blue Coral wax base. Finish polished with NuFinish . . . super smooth . . .

Neck: SJB-75C Fretless Bass Neck with Black Block Inlays
Most SX bass necks come finished in a high-gloss "sticky" poly finish. The gloss has been "reduced" to a matt finish with Scotch Brite and resealed with Blue Coral and polished.

This bound neck butt doesn't exactly match the pocket of the SJB body so I had to file the neck butt 1/8" to a rounder profile.

Nut: SX necks usually come with either a plastic nut or no nut installed. On occasion, the necks may even have just a thin mark where the nut should be, leaving the assembler the choice of which nut will be used. I am leaving the plastic nut installed temporarily so I can experiment with the tone. I'll be making a bone nut, a brass nut, a corian nut, etcetera, just for my own shits'n'giggles.

Headstock: No logos. Clear Gloss with Black SX Tuners & string retainer. All tuner shaft holes had to be enlarged for the bushings to fit without splitting the headstock. Mounting screw holes had to be drilled.

Bridge: Higher mass Gotoh Style Black Bridge installed with ground wire beneath lower plate. Preset saddle heights and lengths to Fender specifications.

Pickguard: I had to file the PG to fit neck butt profile. These 3-ply pickguards come with the edge showing black-white-black. I painted the edge solid black.

Strings: Intended on installing DR Hand Wound Black Beauties: .045, .065, .085, .105. These are coated with a black lacquer to prolong the life of the strings. The choice for roundwounds instead of flatwounds has to do with their clearer sound. Haven't purchased the DR strings but they sure would look sharp~!

Electronics: Passive SX Jazz Pickups. Installed pups with dual rubber pads (not cheap foam) instead of springs to enable the pups to be adjustable yet solid in any position. Applied copper shielding to all cavities. Installed American made control pots and output jack. Soldered all wiring with longer pickup and ground wires to enable easier removal if necessary. Adjusted pickup height to stock Fender specifications, then adjusted for balanced output.
Price: $350.00

It didn't sell for $350 because Ron wants
a fretted neck instead of the fretless.

SOLD: $400.00 plus $30 Shipping

SX SJB Vintage White with Black Bound Fretted 4-String Jazz Bass
I'm swapping out the necks which will also require at least a partial fretjob, redress and setup. I'll also be cutting a nut slot in the new neck and fitting a new GraphTech Black TUSQ XL nut (an $extra on parts) because it's not coming with either. The total additional charge for the above work was/is quotted at $100, bringing the total to $450.00

Then I made Ron an offer he couldn't refuse~!

I knocked $50 off the price if Ron payed for the neck work immediately. If I didn't get the only available matching fretted neck from Rondo right away I might be forced to buy another bass just to get the neck. So the deal went down smoooothly and everybody is happy . . . right Ron~?

Ordered the SJB-75C Neck from Rondo Wednesday (09-03-08) and is due to arrive here tomorrow afternoon.    Rondo is only 1-1/2 hours from my house~!

Neck arrived Friday, September 05, 2008 12:13 PM

Note: We have an irregularity here Ron. A dark grain mark that needs your
attention and disposition. Email me and let me know what you think about it.

Ordered a pre-slotted Black TUSQ XL Nut from GraphTech: 09-03-08
BLACK TUSQ XL is designed to boost your guitar's tone and performance. This precision nut is made with a special formulation of material based on our highly resonant TUSQ man made ivory, which couples the strings' vibrations to the neck and is impregnated with Teflon to improve the tuning performance of your guitar. Playing hard or doing massive string bends, your strings simply glide back into tune. - Continued at GraphTech

The nut I chose was not the specified Jazz nut as it appears as though it may be too shallow, so I ordered Part no. PT-1200-00 due to its height of 11/32".
Sure, I'll have to reduce its height more than the Jazz nut shown but the other choice (PT-1212-00) shows the slots looking to be too close to the ends.

GraphTech Nut: Arrived 09-11-08. The nut finally arrived but get this: they sent the WRONG one~! They sent the curved Fender jazz one. It doesn't even look like graphite~! It's got marks on the side of it that looks like an injection molded plastic nut. The only difference is a lot of plastic nuts are hollow.

I'm pissed . . . I've waited since the 3rd (8 days) and this crap happens. Well, I have to make it work. The radius of the top looks the same though. I'll just have to radius the nut slot in the neck. Oh well, at least the tuner bushings are in and the frets are all set. I just need to do a final polish after I set the nut.

Oh SHIT~! Turns out the graphite nut is definitely NOT a Jazz nut. The string spacings are too wide (pbass nut) and would force the E & G strings to ride the edge of the frets. This nut is NFG for anything but a P-bass~!

Take a look at the nut they sent me. See how wide it is, and where the strings would hafta ride?? Well, take a look at a Jazz nut on the board. I want to use the Jazz nut but don't want to wait for GraphTech to resend one, do you?

Either way, I'd rather install the other black nut I have and remove the charge below for the GraphTech nut.

• 09-15-08 - Cut nut slot. See string slot height mark on nut prior to install.
Installed nut into slot with white glue. Squared tuning key in bushings and marked headstock in prep for drilling. Drilled and installed tuners.

Filed neck butt to fit pocket profile. Clamped neck to pocket, drilled neck holes, and attached to body. String up and attach string retainer. Set neck relief, string height, pickup height, and intonation . . . bass is good to go.
