SX SJB-75 Ash Body

General Inspection: 01-08-09 : Looks like a 5-string bass to me~!
Condition is great, no chips, dips, pings, dings, nor gashes. That's always a plus.
Strapped her on, neck dive is considerable, weight is 11 lbs. and maybe then some. Tuned her up, low B is very floppy, is not intonated, but the electronics worked fine.   Pros: Looks great and played okay.   Cons: Fuck this floppy B~!
It's also worth mention the strings were wound on the posts from bottom to top.

Body Finish: 2-1/2 Tone Burst.     Actually looks more like Tobacco to me.
The body gets polished with Dr. Duck's AxWax before and after reassembly. AxWax contains NO wax, abrasives, silicone, synthetics, or acids.

Pickguard: Jazz pickguard is black, not white, as shown.
The backside of the pickguard received copper foil for shielding.

Thumb Rest: Actually, it's a Finger Rest, as pictured.

Bridge: SX bridge will be replaced with an OEM Deluxe 5-String Bridge.

Not In Stock 01-07-09: Waiting for answer from Source as to when available.
01-08-09: 4PM - Just got a reply and he told me it would be TWO months~!
The only ones he has in stock are black and gold.   SHIT~!   I'm getting Black.
I don't know why I'm freaking; the black bridge will match even if exposed~!
1-14-09: Attached bridge . . . see.

Bridge Cover: SX Chrome - will be polished and sealed both sides.
Reattaching the bridge required new holes. Apparently the 5-string OEM DEluxe bridge is larger than the stock SX bridge, not merely beefier.

Strap Locks: Schaller, 1 pair with black rubber washers.
1-14-09: Attached with thread sealer - Yup, they're on there for good . . . see.

SX SJB Neck

Description: Black Bound Maple. Maple board. 20 jumbo frets. Black block inlays.

Fretwork: 01-14-09: Take a look at this perfect example of a fret end that never got touched~! You can slash your fingers on this one it's so sharp.   Ouch~!
Actually, none of the fret ends were dressed. But this one snagged me the bitch.

01-17-09: Considered a "partial" fretjob due to not replacing frets. The neck was installed in my proprietary neck jig with fretboard dead level. A two foot framing square and a dial indicator were used to determine the height of each fret and the relationship between all the frets. Found 5 frets high and 2 low. Taped off board, leveled, crowned, end radiused, polished, and treated with Dr. Duck's AxWax.

Deglossing: 01-17-09: The backside of the neck was "deglossed". A Scotchbrite pad was used on the backside to break the glaze down a lttle bit while still maintaining the integrity of the finish. The entire neck was traeated with AxWAx. Great stuff~!   There is NO EXTRA CHARGE for the gloss reduction of the backside when other work is performed ($10 otherwise).

Headstock: New Style SX clear with decals.   NO matching headstock per T.R.
This is an often requested Add-on and is an extra $50 in labor. On a 3-tone I don't get into that as it's such a small area and I've found trying to match a 2-or-3 tone on a headstock looks shitty. I would go with a black face myself. There are other option too, like reshaping the headstock as shown in this reshaped SX headstock.

Tuners: Looks like wavy Titans, not vintage style machines. Nice, I'll lube'em.
After removing the strings found the keys to be nice and stable, no slop at all.

Strings: DR Bass Sunbeams - Mediums: .045 .065 .085 .105 .125
The strings that came with the bass: .050", .070", .090", .105", .125"

Ordered DR Sunbeams: 01-09-09
Received the strings: 01-21-09

String Nut: Stock plastic nut will be replaced with GraphTech Black TUSQ.
I will have to grab a TUSQ Nut blank too just in case one works out better than the other. They're classified as self-lubricating, whatever the fk that means~!

01-14-09: The nut took 1-3/4 hrs to remove. It was glued along its entire length.
01-21-09: Filed nut to dry-fit into slot; filed preliminary string slots; assembled neck and installed strings; tuned up and intonated . . . B slot is still too high
but will adjust in the morning along with string height, action, and pickup output.

Setup: includes body & fretboard polishing, adjustments of neck relief, tuning, intonation, action, and pickup height for maximum output.

Completed bass at 8PM on 1-22-09 after lowering the B string in its slot and calibrating the pickup height for optimum output. Sounds good to me 'cept one thing: I personally don't like a 34" scale B string - rubbabanditis - No buzz tho~!

Passive Electronics

Pickups: SX 5-String Jazz Pickups.
Upon inspection found the output to be balanced and adequate, aka normal.
1-14-09: Assembly - Bridge Pickup with Pad -|- Neck Pickup with Pad

Pickup Cover: Chrome - will be polished and sealed both sides.
Upon removal of the cover I noticed two dents in the face of the body up at the front edge of the cover.

Controls: V-V-T. Wired controls for a Standard Jazz bass including chrome control plate, jazz knobs with set screws, solid shaft 250K audio CTS pots, .047 mfd 200v Orange Drop capacitor and Switchcraft jack.

Note: 1-9-09: While test fitting the prewired control plate to the cavity with the pickguard I noticed a GAP of an eighth of an inch at the tip of the plate which not only looks like shit but actually would expose the inner cavity. This is because the control plate is for a Fender bass and the SX plate is pointed. Not to worry tho as I drilled out the SX plate. (This was a note to anyone interested). Normally I wire SX plates with individual pots. I prewired these Fender plates not thinking of SX.
Here's a gappage photo~!   And here's a pointed SX plate: see the point ?

Cavities: The tone pot area did not have to be enlarged for the CTS tone pot.
1-10-09: Shielded with copper foil, including pickup cavities, soldering all seams.
Pics: Shielded Cavities -|- Soldered Seams -|- Gold-Plated Shield~!

Wiring: This particular Jazz control assembly was wired using vintage style cloth-covered wiring intended for Fender. View the Control Assembly Wiring.
1-14-09: Assembly - Bridge Ground hookup - Note that the wiring is long enough to allow the control plate assembly to be removed from the body so it doesn't hit it in the event of future maintenance so you don't hang it or scratch the body.
Soldered the Bridge Pickup and + - wire joints, then double taped.
Soldered the Neck Pickup and + - wire joints, then double taped. Also note the ground connections from the output jack to the tone pot to the bridge pup volume pot to the neck pup volume pot. Pretty straight forward so all units are grounded.
Note that the ground wire is one piece with the insulation stripped only where they are soldered to each pot base.    Class dismissed. Toss me a beer~!

Hi Brian,

UPS showed up this afternoon and handed over the bass to me, in perfect condition, looks pretty damn good! I opened it right away, let it warm up, then tuned it up a half-hour ago & let her rip.

Damn!! I am really impressed by the bass overall! It looks great and most important, it feels great! The neck dive seems to be tolerable. Nice job overall on the neck, feels really, really smooth & feels just plain good! To me the B is cool – I’ve never had a 5ver and have only played them sparingly over the years, so this one seems fine to me! No noise whatsoever from this bass. Great advice on the stock pickups, so far to me they sound better than anything I’ve heard on a Squier, and frankly better than some MIM products. Overall, I’m very pleased with the tone I’m getting! Excellent sustain. The tuning keys seem like they belong on a higher-end bass.

Just found one problem – it appears the G string is hitting the bottom pole of the front pickup when playing anything on it past the 13th fret, deadening it. I assume I need to lower the pole and/or pickup, raise the saddle, or some other adjustment that I can make? Just let me know!

Thanks for the great job, Brian!

Tom

Hi Tom,

The G string hitting the pickup??? Hmmmnn . . . never had a problem with it. I didn't notice it when I played it. When looking at the string-to-pickup space, where is it at? There should be about 3/16" but I see no problem with dropping the pickup a hair, especially on the neck p'up. Or raise the saddle a hair. You must play pretty hard. Usually the pole-slapping is on the B or E.

I'd remove the front pickup cover and drop the pickup a hair before messing with the saddles though. I'm pretty sure I've got the strings all at their optimum height off the board.
