SX SJB-75 CT Alder Body

I bought this body with an SX tortoise pickguard from a guy on TalkBass.com who had started to redo the paint but never finished his project so here she is, ready for me, or you, should you be the lucky one. Although I'm in the process of finishing this body in a vintage white, you still have a "little" bit of time before I lay on the color. Not long though as this project is in the loop. Should you want a different color after I paint this, you'll be adding significantly to the labor bill.

The Plan is to build this bass to be as close as the SX SJB-75 in the photo above which allows YOU to make changes and purchase any upgrades along the way.
Initial SX SJB-75 cost: $160.00
Update to The Plan: 3-18-09: I'm rebuilding this jazz bass with a fretless black bound and blocked maple/maple jazz neck with matching headstock and am contemplating offering an SPB fretted maple/rosewood neck to go with it, also fully serviced and with matching headstock.

Body Finish: Vintage White
  • Saturday 3-7-09: Applied the first coat of paint to the body.
  • Tuesday 3-17-09: Applied additional finish coats of paint to the body.

Pickguard: SX Tortoise

Finger Rest: There are finger rest holes in the existing tortoise pickguard as well as scratches from use. It also has the pickup cover holes. While I am planning to install a cover, I'm not too keen on the finger rest as I don't personally use one, but one will be provided as this bass initially comes with one. It can also be relocated, or eliminated. should you choose to use a different pickguard or change its location.

Bridge: Stock SX 7-hole - chrome.
For a direct replacement bridge, which is also a higher mass bridge than the stock SX bridge, the OEM Deluxe is an option which also still fits under the bridge cover.
OEM Deluxe 4-String Bass Bridge: Chrome - $22.95
Bridge & Pickup Covers: Fender Chrome
Ordinarily I would have allowed the choice in a custom build but the body already had the holes drilled and the project is for an SX SJB-75 CT anyway.

Strap Buttons: SX chrome. I suggest swapping for Schaller Strap Locks.
Schaller Strap Locks - Nickel: $20.00 shipped

SX SJB Neck

This SJB Neck is a fretless black bound and blocked neck that I originally had mounted on this bass. It is new and was swapped off when Ron Rummage bought it and wanted a fretted one instead.

Headstock: No SX logo.
Add Matching Vintage White Paint: $50.00 labor
String Nut: SX white plastic.
I am of the opinion that if a brand new nut is installed, be it whatever material, to run it until there's cause to change it. In this case, the nut was fine when I had it installed initially so, unless there's plans to install larger than medium diameter strings, or smaller, this plastic nut will sit where she is now. Should you want, say, a bone nut installed instead, this would be an added $35.00 charge.

Strings: Rotosound RS77 flatwounds: .045, .065, .085, and .105

Strings: $30.00
Tuners: SX chrome

Electronics - Passive

Cavities: The control cavities and pickup cavities were sheilded with copper foil. This adds $50 to the overall cost. All basses leaving my shop get copper shielding. This must be added onto the initial SX pricing.
Sheilding Labor and Material: $50.00
Pickups: SX Jazz
The company that makes SX pickups makes them to the same specifications as Fender. To all those thinking that SX pickups are crap, get your head outta yer ass~!  However, if you want other pickups, contact me.

Pickup Pads: Everyone knows pickups come with screws and springs, but I provide a dense foam pad under each pickup in case you happen to play directly over each pickup. Perhaps you play hard enough and allow your strings or fingers to hit the pickup, then you're probably also aware the clicking noise and the movement of the pickups. With the pads this eliminates the movement. To eliminate the clicking you'll have to either move the pickups lower or put solid covers on them. The pads are standard in my shop and there's no added charge.

Control Plate: SX Jazz - chrome: Front -|- Rear
Note: the 1st photo looks like scratches in the chrome; they are not scratches; it's lint. And the 2nd photo is viewing the existing SX wiring. There is no added charge for this control assembly unless you go for the upgrade using heavy duty American made pots, cap, jack and vintage cloth wiring. The control plate also gets reamed to accomodate the larger diameter solid shaft of each potentiometer.

Control Plate Assembly Upgrade: $50.00
Control Knobs: SX Black press-on Jazz knobs come standard with the SX SJB-75.
If you are choosing the upgraded control plate assembly with the solid shaft pots, you will need a set of three Jazz Knobs with set screws. If you want other than the Jazz knobs, contact me with your choice.
Jazz Bass Control Knobs with Set Screws: $6.95
Wiring: Just a note as to the wire itself. The vintage style cloth wire I use is NOT like that of the lone-gone past. It is top quality stranded and tinned. The cloth covering is there to emulate that of the old style looks alone. The wire I use is rated at 600 volts. For more information on this excellent wire, click here.
