9-12-08: Starting with a body only . . . I'm getting a used 3 Tone Sunburst body in a trade with Jason Welch (TBer) for the lake placid blue Jazz body from an SX SJB-62MG LPB I've parted out.
The only other component involved with this trade is the pickguard. The only thing I need to locate is a neck. I usually always go for fretless because that's what I play; however, I may not be able to get an SX fretless rosewood unless I defret this one here. |
SX SPJ-62 P-Bass Body
 Front -|- Rear |
Bodywork: The only known issues requiring rework, besides reclearing the body, is the extra strap button holes at the base which I'll have to fill and paint.
 | 9-19-08: Received the body and discovered it to be excellent~! Must have been the photos I was looking at. Maybe Jason did some serious polishing and buffing before he made his own box, wrapped the body in a shirt, suspended it in foam, and . . . you won't believe how well packed this was~! No shit: LOOK . . . you can see how shocked I was about it. |
Body Finish: I don't have to reclear the entire body. It appears to only be a matter of a few holes needing filling, a bit of black paint, polishing and buffing.
Neck: 9-12-08: SX SPB Maple P-Bass Neck with Rosewood Fretboard from Rondo.
Neck has 20 frets with dot inlays and side markers. Pre-slotted nut slot 1-5/8" wide" (nut not included). Neck butt is 2-1/2" wide x 3/4" deep (not including the fretboard). Pre-cut holes for tuners are 1/2" in diameter and will need to be enlarged to accept 11/16" bushings.
9-15-08: If I don't find a fretless neck, I have a length of Pau Ferro I'm thinking of replacing the fretboard with, which won't require all that much more work than if I were to defret the rosewood. But I'm looking for an SX fretless rosewood now.
9-17-08: Located an SX SPB-62 20-fret rosewood neck with tuners at TalkBass.com from Tim Taylor who lives on the South Shore, MA.
9-25-08: Neck arrived and installed without additional fretwork.
Tuners: Chrome SX tuners, bushings, etc. from an SX-SJB. Correction; turns out the neck from Tim Taylor will have tuners included~!
Bridge: Chrome SX 7-hole. 9-24-08: Drilled and installed a chrome bridge cover.
Pickguard: Black. Copper foil shielding applied to back side to cover cavities.
9-24-08: Drilled two extra screw holes at the control area to help stiffen the loose area. When operating the controls without, the tendency was to lift the pickguard.
Electronics: Passive. Hot Rod PJ Wiring. 9-24-08: Wired with all new components.
Had to use small diameter pots and output jack due to space restrictions.
Pickups: SX P-bass Pickup and SX Jazz Bridge Pickup, both from new take-offs.
9-24-08: Installed pickups with rubber pads and springs. Height adjustments made.
Controls: V-V-T. SX control pots with chrome knobs. Normally, as part of an upgrade, the pots, cap and jack are replaced with CTS brand pots, Orange Drop cap and a Switchcraft jack. However, this bass has limited space in the cavity near the tone knob and a small diameter hole for the output jack. Seeing as this bass was partially copper shielded, I opted to simply use the stock SX stuff that I have. Otherwise, it would require routing out those cav areas.
Cavities: 9-23-08: Redid copper foil shielding in cavities and back of pickguard. Extended copper to include the output jack cavity. The jack plate covers the copper. Overlapped copper onto body top for grounding in several areas.
Strings: D'Addario EXL170 XL Nickel Wound Bass Strings - .045, .065, .080, .105
String Nut: Stock SX white plastic. Nut to be swapped out for choice of bone, brass, graphite, etc. as part of Option 2
